Here at Jackpot Records we are proud to present you with a reissue of the amazing album CQ by Dutch Psych/Garage rockers The Outsiders.

“CQ” spans R&B, spacey experimental numbers, folk rock and a revved-up kind of punk that pre-dates the angular moodiness of what would become the no wave/post punk sound a decade later. This unpredictable stylistic approach, when coupled with across-the-board amazing songs, make this one of the masterpieces of late 60’s psychedelic garage rock, and a cornerstone album of the genre. Pressed in a vinyl-only limited edition, this deluxe reissue is replicated precisely with gorgeous silver foil cover art. Extensive liner notes include a 2009 interview with lead guitarist Ronnie Splinter about the recording of the album and an exclusive introduction by Mike Stax, editor of Ugly Things magazine.

Available for pre-order for 14.95! Orders will ship on or before September 1st.

Our Record label is also stepping into the realm of new local releases like Dave Depper doing Paul McCartney’s RAM, Sam Coomes side-project CROCK, and a full length by Ylang Ylang. While our record label is excited to venture into this new local arena, we are continuing with our fantastic line of reissues as well and we have lots more on the way!

__________________________________________________

With the summer weather finally here we are marking the occasion with a store-wide 20% off sale on USED products at both of our locations! Come in July 31st and August 1st and check out our huge selection of new and used LPs, CDs, and DVDs.
Fundraiser Night: The T.A.M.I: Teen Age Music International Show (120 minutes)

7 pm , $5.00 Suggested Donation / Free

Jackpot Records jump starts its film festival this year with an opportunity to get in on the action early. While the following week’s films are presented at no charge, we preamble the festival this year with a fundraiser showing of the legendary T.A.M.I. Show.

Our festival is made possible each year with the support of a number of businesses and citizen-sponsors, and this night is about letting those who wish to throw a little love and support towards the festival’s continuation do so. With a $5 suggested donation, be a part of the kickoff celebration as we welcome another year of momentous film and documentary offerings.

THE T.A.M.I. SHOW introduced rock ‘n soul youth culture to America in the first concert movie of the rock era. One of the rarest and most sought-after performance films from its time, the 1964 concert event features The Rolling Stones. James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson And The Miracles, The Supremes and many other American and British Invasion hitmakers in their prime. The 1964 uncut and complete version that only aired in theaters.

“In the top 3 of all rock movies.” — Quentin Tarantino

MONDAY, APRIL 26TH

You Weren’t There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-1984 (120 minutes)

7pm, Free

YOU WEREN’T THERE: A HISTORY OF CHICAGO PUNK 1977-1984 is a rare glimpse into a truly one-of-a-kind American underground music scene that documents the impact that the punk movement had on the Windy City.

Though often overlooked in the annals of rock history, Chicago served as an important early supporter of this burgeoning and controversial music genre that could be violent and unsavory at times, but was always tempered with large doses of humor, art, and intelligence.

Features vintage concert footage of, and interviews with, Articles of Faith, Naked Raygun, Big Black and more…

**************************************

TUESDAY, APRIL 27TH

Cracking the Egg: The Untold Story Of The Nightcrawlers (40 min)

7 pm, Free

CRACKING THE EGG de-scrambles the story of 60s garage upstarts The Nightcrawlers and their circuitous road to cementing a spot in rock ‘n roll history. Setting them apart from the many requisite high-energy R&B cover acts of the day, this Daytona Beach five-piece injected their sets with catchy originals. Amongst many notable tunes was a lightly cast number called “Little Black Egg”. This song, with modest chart success, would go on to be covered and recorded by a wide spectrum of bands from the 60s up to today.

At once singular and microcosmic, watch as fans, fellow musicians and the bands themselves give insight into this, one of the strange stones that make up rock history.

Click here for a sneak peek!

Psych Night (60 minutes)

Classic 60s garage/psych music videos from the Jackpot Records vaults.

**************************************

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28TH

Do It Yourself: The Story of Rough Trade — BBC (90 minutes)

7 pm, Free

Part cautionary tale, part success story, DO IT YOURSELF: THE ROUGH TRADE STORY charts the extraordinary tale of Geoff Travis and company’s legendary indie record store and subsequent start up label. This documentary laces together energizing archival footage with contemporary interviews framing a classic tale of earnest intentions confronting the inevitably dreary fiscal and commercial realities of the music biz.

Johnny Marr, Jarvis Cocker, Travis himself and many other players and observers of the label weigh in with genuine insight that frames the historical context of art/punk, DIY and also explains how Rough Trade’s foray into independent distribution in the 70s and 80s changed the modern musical landscape. Live clips of Buzzcocks, The Raincoats, The Fall, a healthy swathe of The Smiths and endless others.

**************************************

THURSDAY, APRIL 29TH

Playing Live: Jandek and Thurston Moore

7 pm, $20.00 (Advance tickets available at both Jackpot Records locations)

This year the apex of our Free Film Festival is neither a film nor free. We are proud to spotlight a live, living confluence of art and intrigue with a Jandek performance featuring Thurston Moore. The Sonic Youth front man and renowned collaborator joins onstage with the enigmatical musical force known as Jandek for an evening of unannounced intention.

The removal of parameters is the unstated allure of a night like this, the result being something you have not heard before and will not hear again. It promises to be a singular evening of artistic collision and a wholly unique musical conversation as these performers find their way through the set and allow us to listen in. Frankly quintessential.

**************************************

FRIDAY, APRIL 30TH

Mellodrama–The Mellotron Movie (80 min)

Q&A with Filmmaker Dianna Dilworth following the screening

7 pm, Free

MELLODRAMA looks at how a backyard, home grown invention from the 1950s transformed the face of music production today.

From its modest beginnings in a California garage to appearing at Royal Albert Hall, we follow the journey of an ingenious contraption called the Mellotron. Essentially the first sampling instrument, this complex keyboard and its haunting sound has changed and influenced the production and texture of popular music. This groundbreaking device has been put to prominent use on scores of hits and classics ranging from The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” to King Crimson’s “The Court of The Crimson King” to Kanye West’s “Gold Digger”.

It’s a fascinating story of the 50 year and counting odyssey of musical invention, revolution, betrayal and rediscovery from the Beatles to Black Sabbath to The Flaming Lips and more.

“The Mellotron stays cool.” — Brian Wilson

captivating experience that engages the listener. The album surpassed even the most outthere
psychedelia of its day, predicting what would soon become the disjointed aural
landscapes of Faust and the violent scuzz of Throbbing Gristle. Vivid elements of
Cromagnon’s influence continues to shine in the lysergic rhythms of the Sun City Girls,
Nurse With Wound, Ghost, and Animal Collective.

Jackpot Records is super pumped to announce that on Thursday, April 29th we will be presenting a one-time only show with JANDEK AND THURSTON MOORE. Gasp!

Yes, you TOTALLY read that correctly.

In what could be one of the few possible upgrades in both rarity and uniqueness to a live Jandek performance, Thurston Moore will join the legendary Texas recluse for a one-time, on stage collaboration.

Jackpot Records is proud to facilitate this aligning of the planets at the Hollywood Theatre as they did for one of Jandek’s earliest live shows nearly four years ago. That show, also curated by Jackpot Records, sold out and was released on CD to widespread acclaim as the album “Portland Thursday“. The subsequent years have only enhanced clamor and interest in this true outsider musician.

Thurston Moore, front man for Sonic Youth and aficionado of all things reasonably unique, is a dream collaborator, ramping up the possibilities for what this night could bring. This show, like the musicians themselves, is here only once and then gone forever.

Jandek + Thurston Moore. Just let it sink in.
When it’s done sinking in, click here to purchase tickets, which are now on sale.
