MIJ REISSUE AVAILABLE FOR ORDER

Presenting the latest vinyl release from the Jackpot Records label (along with our friends ESP Disk): MIJ’s “Yodeling Astrologer”!

Yodeling Astrologer (aka: Color By The Number) could be considered an anomaly, a one-off or a miracle of circumstance in the history of psychedelic pop music. Mij, a.k.a. Jim Holmberg was discovered by ESP owners while playing in Washington Square Park in the summer of 1968. His style and persona mesmerized the label heads, and he explained to them a recent auto accident had fractured his skull but left him changed. He perceived sound, color and vision differently and he had funneled this new world of perception directly into his music.

All this was enough to warrant getting Mij into the studio to lay down a record of his rambly, cosmic folk songs. The entire album was recorded in three hours, first-takes and impromptu production intact, then pressed up and introduced to the world shortly thereafter.

To focus on the yodeling aspect of the Yodeling Astrologer would miss some of the depth of this album. Not just a hippie novelty act of the time, this is a truly thoughtful and somewhat frenzied document. Uneasy reverberations and soft echoes glide over Holmberg’s breezy songs, creating a consistent sonic environment as spontaneous as it is intriguing. Available on vinyl for the first time since an incredibly limited original pressing in 1969 on ESP Disk’.

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Well-known around Portland, these boys have been making waves on the local house show scene for awhile now. Don’t be fooled, though–they can certainly hold their own in front of a larger audience as they proved a few weeks ago at their album release show, playing to a sweatily packed Holocene.

With spookily harmonic vocals and a drum beat that subtly begs attention with smartly placed rim shots and bass drum, there’s a certain magic that happens. Try not to get chills as those first vocals on “Technicolor” kick it off…

JANDEK, “Six and Six”

NOW OUT…

We’ve got over 2000 items posted online! Here’s a few to peek at:

Jay Reatard, “Watch Me Fall” (LP)
For his second studio album and proper Matador debut, Memphis prolific punk wunderkind Jay Reatard has moved beyond his roots and recorded an album chockful of irresistible melodies, the songs cascading with joyous hooks. He would not be Jay Reatard, however, if there wasn’t a certain aggro negativity, and the song titles and lyrics do much to undercut the pop sensibility: I’m Watching You, Hang Them All, Can’t Do It Anymore, Wounded, It Ain’t Gonna Save Me.

The Lemonheads, “Varshons” (LP)
Covers album that runs the gamut, from hardcore anthems like G.G. Allin’s “Layin’ Up with Linda” to Green Fuz’s “Green Fuz,” to the more classically dark “Waiting Around to Die” by Townes Van Zandt. Produced by Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers), Evan Dando’s burnished voice keeps it simple and lets the incredible playlist hold its own.

Patrick Wolf, “The Bachelor” (CD + LP)
Patrick Wolf’s fourth album was originally intended to be a double-disc set entitled Battle, recorded in Battle, Hastings. The two CDs were titled The Bachelor (an album documenting a time in his life where he was traveling excessively, battling with the world around him, his self, his desire and tackling depression and bachelorhood) and The Conqueror (an album documenting his current love affair and return to a place of happiness, compassion, stability, and domestic life). Patrick has since decided to release both discs separately, so as not to overload people with too much information at one time. The first to be released, The Bachelor features collaborations with Eliza Carthy, Thomas Bloch, Alec Empire, Matthew Herbert and Tilda Swinton.

Grizzly Bear, “Horn of Plenty” (LP)
For the first time, the full Horn of Plenty album (Grizzly Bear’s 2004 debut album, back when they were more cubs than bears…har har…) is available on 180gm black vinyl w/printed inner sleeve. Holy crap!

Horse Meat Disco, “S/T” (CD)
Following the label’s acclaimed ‘Disco Not Disco’ and ‘Disco Italia’ releases during 2008-9, Strut teams up with one of London’s leading disco collectives, Horse Meat Disco, for their hotly anticipated debut compilation release.

Bloody Panda, “Summon” (CD)
The follow-up to their acclaimed Pheromone, Summon takes the nightmare Bloody Panda first explored on their split LP with experimentalists Kayo Dot even further into the depths. The album is a disturbing, cinematic vision of terror and frightening depravity that lurks within the dark chambers of doom metal horror.

Amanda Blank, “I Love You” (CD + LP)
Blank is a member of a loose collective of musicians that includes Spank Rock, Santigold, and Diplo. She takes the influences of 90’s R&B, ’80s dance, indie, new wave and Brit pop and weaves them into her own double Dutch.

Pisces, “A Lovely Sight” (CD + LP)
In 1969, the Midwest was hurting for the hard stuff, but what it got was plenty of the White Album-enough to have Jim Krein, Paul DiVenti, and Linda Bruner recording through a glass onion all their own. The unsettling balance of their unissued LP combines homespun psych and secondhand studio trickery, resulting in a diverse, haunted rock headspace few coastal bands ever flew through, let alone over.
