A luminous and deeply felt work of acoustic jazz, it reveals Sullivan as a composer of uncommon lyricism and emotional depth--an artist whose technique and tone rival his better-known contemporaries, yet whose quiet mastery has long flown under the radar. Entirely arranged, composed, and produced by Sullivan himself, Genesis balances freedom and structure, intellect and soul. From the haunting beauty of 'Evening Song' to the spiritual yearning of 'Field Holler' and the climactic title track, the album alternates between moments of introspection and fiery ensemble interplay. The performances shimmer with the electricity of collaboration, featuring an all-star lineup that includes Sonny Fortune, Stanley Cowell, Billy Hart, Alex Blake, Onaje Allen Gumbs, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Anthony Jackson, Lawrence Killian, Alphonse Mouzon, and L. Sharon Freeman. Recorded at Sound Ideas in New York City in June 1974, the album captures the creative pulse of an era when spiritual and avant-garde jazz coexisted with remarkable intensity. Its interplay of brass, piano, and rhythm evokes both the emotive power of Miles Davis's acoustic work and the exploratory sophistication of Woody Shaw, yet Sullivan's melodic voice remains unmistakably his own.
