As early as 1980, the band had fundamentally deconstructed the blues form, stripping it of commercial polish and technical virtuosity and reassembling it with a jagged, abrasive punk disposition. In doing so, they engineered the initial genetic mutation that allowed punk and blues to permanently fuse. Their early White Street loft recordings, anthologized on Feeding Tube Records in 2014, capture this sonic ethos, incorporating not only the blues, but spazzed-out takes on jazz, fake-disco, and noisy rave-ups. Their original releases on independent imprints Roller Skate, Tweet, and Jimboco Records highlighted an unstable, lurching rhythm section paired with howling, unpolished vocals. The local media and underground publications of the downtown scene quickly recognized that the band was operating outside the boundaries of typical art-rock or straightforward post-punk. While numerous line-up changes quickly restructured the group shortly after their initial recordings, a revolving-door policy kept each performance unique. Neneh Cherry, Elliott Sharp, Carla Whitney, Jerry Williams, Lydia Lunch and numerous others joined the group across various downtown NYC stages. By the time these recordings were captured in 1982 and 1983, marking the twilight of the band's live appearances, the Hi Sheriffs of Blue had shed their revolving-door skin and streamlined their approach into a volatile power trio of extraordinary speed, ferocity, and chaos. This final iteration replaced the sprawling avant-garde jams of their early loft days with a weaponized assault; an unpredictable, loose cannon of energy that pushed their mutated blues to the absolute brink of collapse.

https://jackpotrecords.com/products/hi-sheriffs-of-blue-live-at-the-mudd-club-and-a7-12-vinyl-ep-pre-order-out-11-6-26
