Arsenio Rodríguez, "El Ciego Maravilloso," basically rewrote the rulebook for Cuban music. He beefed up the band with conga, piano and a punchy trumpet section, and in doing so he shaped the son montuno sound that later fed straight into salsa. Yeah, that guy. This record, cut in 1957, catches Arsenio and his conjunto in full swing: tight grooves, fiery horns, and that raw, joyful energy that makes it impossible to sit still. Whether you're a longtime dancer, a collector, or just curious where all your favorite Latin rhythms came from, this is the place to start.
