Six years after the live sets that became Sunday At The Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby, Bill Evans returned to the Village Vanguard in 1967 for two nights with Eddie Gómez on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.
Those recordings became the double album California Here I Come in 1982, released two years after Evans' passing. Confusing title aside, this is a sharp, spirited trio date, full of rhythmic spark, open interplay and the kind of deep listening that made Evans so influential.
Standards like Round Midnight, In a Sentimental Mood, Stella by Starlight and the then-new Alfie all land with real energy. This Verve Vault edition is all-analog, cut from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180-gram vinyl.
