'One Soul Now', originally released in 2004, draws together all the wisdom, passion, skill and insight collected during almost 20 years of playing, writing, touring, recording and living together as Cowboy Junkies. Following the group’s acclaimed 2001 release 'Open', the 10 songs that make up 'One Soul Now' marked an ambitious departure for the group; it was the first time Cowboy Junkies had recorded entirely on their own, without the mediation of an outside producer or engineer. 'One Soul Now' was created in the band’s rehearsal space in their hometown of Toronto, which doubled as a recording studio for the project.
On its original release, 'One Soul Now' attracted widespread praise. AllMusic.com proclaimed, “It picks up where Open left off, retaining the tougher sound highlighted by edgy guitar work and a more rhythmic pulse. Margo Timmins' vocals are hypnotically lovely as usual, merging with bluesy guitar riffs and emerging above the morass as the chorus kicks in", whilst Q Magazine dubbed the Cowboy Junkies “The hippest name in alternative circles”
