Blume presents The Days Pass Quickly Immersed in the Shadow of Eternity, a new work by the American composer Lea Bertucci written for Norbert Rodenkirchen, flutist of the early music ensemble Sequentia. Commissioned by ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, it was recorded at ZKM in 2024 and premiered there in November 2025. Bertucci emerged from New York's noise scene in the early 2010s with works for saxophone, electronics and tape, before turning to acoustic phenomena, site-specific resonance and complex harmonic interplay. Her recent work has increasingly found her composing for others, as on Of Shadow and Substance (2023) and Fata Morgana, a piece for organ released earlier this year, alongside duos with Ben Vida, Lawrence English and Olivia Block. The piece grew from a meeting with Rodenkirchen after a Sequentia concert, and from a series of conversations that brought the two into the studio at ZKM in the summer of 2024. It draws on his collection of Renaissance, Medieval and Neolithic flutes, instruments whose sound has been largely absent from the modern world. Originally conceived for ZKM's 42.4 speaker system, grouped into eight outputs, it was mixed to stereo for this LP. Rodenkirchen's live playing interweaves with Bertucci's electronic arrangements of flute samples, from pulsing clusters to dense fields of sustained tones, timbres and distances. The flutes remain clearly recognizable, and the music often sounds like a live ensemble, with echoes of Medieval polyphony, Sardinian canto a tenore and Buddhist chant. The work carries forward Bertucci's research into psychoacoustics and otoacoustic emissions, here suggesting spaces from Medieval halls to Neolithic caves. Its closest relatives are Phill Niblock's Four Full Flutes and Walter Maioli's decades of work with ancient instruments, alongside Harry Partch and Alvin Curran. Transparent light blue vinyl; edition of 300, with new liner notes by Bradford Bailey.
