Musically, Don't Cry Now blends country rock, folk, and pop, showcasing Ronstadt's gift for interpreting songs written by others. Rather than focusing on original compositions, the album draws from a wide range of songwriters, including J. D. Souther, Randy Newman, Neil Young, and members of the Eagles.
