1957 was a pivotal year for Louis Armstrong. As “Ambassador Satch,” he traveled the world for the U.S. State Department, even as he publicly challenged the government over the Little Rock desegregation crisis. That March, Armstrong and his All Stars played a fundraiser at Highland Park High School in Illinois. Student stage manager Joel Goldstein recorded the concert, preserving what biographer Ricky Riccardi calls “sensational, one of his best.”
