Stef Chura is a Detroit-based singer-songwriter known for her raw vocal style, emotionally direct lyrics, and a fearless approach to blending garage rock, punk energy, and melodic pop instincts. Originally from Alpena, Michigan, Chura began performing and recording in the late 2000s before becoming a fixture in Detroit’s underground music scene, where she developed her distinctive sound through home recordings and live performances.
Messes, Chura’s first album, introduced her singular songwriting voice: intimate yet abrasive, combining vulnerable storytelling with unconventional melodies and her instantly recognizable warbling, expressive vocals. The album’s reception helped establish her as one of the most compelling new voices in indie rock, earning attention from outlets including Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.
Chura expanded her sound on her 2019 album Midnight, produced by Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest. The record amplified her guitar-driven intensity while exploring anger, empowerment, and catharsis.
