There once was a band that opened on tour dates for The Rolling Stones, recorded backing tracks for Paul McCartney and Dr. John, performed on SNL, was covered by Grateful Dead and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and had their hooks sampled on hundreds of tracks – including classics by Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy. However, the band’s name still did not ring out to most of the world.
That band would be New Orleans’ The Meters; you’ll likely recognize their sound instantly as they are in so much of our modern musical DNA.
Led by organist Art Neville, The Meters helped move R&B music toward the heavier direction of funk—complicated rhythms meeting economically powerful riffs that were the wave of what was to come.
