The Three Sounds returned to Blue Note in the late 60s with a sound that feels both familiar and newly expanded. On Soul Symphony, the trio stretch their trademark groove into something broader, richer and deeply orchestral.
Gene Harris on piano, Henry Franklin on bass and Carl Burnett on drums are joined by woodwinds, brass and strings. The music was composed, arranged and conducted by Monk Higgins, whose touch gives the record its sweeping, soulful shape.
The extended title track, Soul Symphony, stands at the centre of it all: a soul jazz opus built on groove, colour and movement.
